Malaysian Company initial step up to build a plant to convert solid waste to energy. The Kuala Lumpur-based environmental waste management company, Octagon Consolidated Berhad ceremonially launched the project toady to build the plant at Karadiyana in Kesbewa.

The build-own-operate plant at a cost of US$248 million will be using an Advanced Thermal Gasification Process capable of destroying up to 1,000 tonnes a day of local municipal solid waste and generate a minimum of 40MW electricity.

Future Plan
The energy produced will be sold to the Ceylon Electricity Board. Construction is expected to start in the second quarter of next year and slated for completion in the second quarter of 2014, the company said in a filing to the Bursa Malaysia.

According to Octagon, the plant will help the Sri Lankan capital city to manage waste effectively through the destruction of solid waste to produce electricity for the Western Province.
Western Province Chief Minister Prasanna Ranatunga, Labour Minister and Labour Relations Gamini Lokuge, Kesbewa Divisional Secretary and senior state officials participated in the ceremony.
The ever growing Bloemendhal Road Garbage Dump in Colombo city has become a health and fire hazard to the residents in the area as the mountain generates odorous and noxious fumes. Sri Lanka is faced with the solid waste problem for the past sixty years.
