Electricity for all - 2012


Mr.Patali Champika Ranawaka Minister of Power and Energy in Sri Lanka  said the electrification programmes launched in the country by the government with the aim of 100 percent electrification by the end of 2012 are achieving their targets.

The Minister addressing a group of trade union leaders has observed that the government under President Mahinda Rajapaksa was committed to providing electricity to all by the end of 2012.


The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has so far managed to achieve it targets in the electrification programme, the Minister has said.
He has urged the politicians not to use electrification programmes carried out by the government to build their images. Ranawaka has said that some politicians have on various occasions called for the speeding up or delaying of certain electrification programmes in order to score points in their constituencies.

According to Ranawaka, electricity is now an essential commodity and not a luxury and the consumers also needed to be more helpful in using electricity sparingly.
