Sri Lanka has decided to charge a registration fee of Rs. 100,000 and an annual renewal fee of Rs. 50,000 from news websites operating in the country.
The registration charge is also applicable for news websites which have already been registered with the Ministry of Mass Media and Information with effect from 1stof January 2012.
The government has also decided to make registration of news websites compulsory.
Sri Lanka Press Council Law of 1973 is expected to be amended to bring in these new regulations.
The Government says, “The main objective of this amendment is to ensure the contents of the websites do not cause harm to defenseless individuals”.
